Typy savan: Na hranici mezi savanami a tropickými deštnými lesy jsou savanové
lesy (vlhký typ savany), pro které je charakteristický hojný výskyt
stromů, zatímco travin je málo. Kolem řek rostou v těchto oblastech
tzv. galeriové lesy, které jsou podobné lesům tropickým. Mají dvě
patra ? spodní patro je stálezelené, horní patro opadává. Naopak mezi
savanami a pouštěmi ustupuje savana suché stepi, ve které je sporá
vegetace, tvořená trsy trávy a zakrslými trnitými keříky. Proto je toto
území označováno jako křovitá savana.
Využití: Člověk využívá savany k pastvě dobytka a pro jejich
úrodnost (rozkladem hustých travnarých porostů vzniká černozem) také k pěstování
bavlníku, podzemnice olejné, obilí, kukuřice, prosa, fazolí, kávy, cukrové
třtiny a různých druhů brambor (batáty, yamy, maniok).
